The idea that thoughts might replicate like genes checks out, and it comes from a credentialed source: Richard Dawkins, in the final chapter of his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, coined the word “meme” to describe exactly this. What’s less often said is that memetics, the field built on that idea, remains one of the most contested proposals in modern evolutionary theory. Its own flagship journal stopped publishing in 2005. A leading contributor closed it out with a paper called “The revealed poverty of the gene-meme analogy.” A credentialed critic has called the whole framework “pseudo-scientific dogma.”

He was careful, in that original telling, about how far to push the analogy. It was a metaphor doing genuine conceptual work, not a discovery that something foreign had been found living in human skulls.

Susan Blackmore Took It Further, and Said So Herself
The specific claim that there’s no genuine “you” behind the thoughts, that personality is a temporary coalition with no true owner, traces to a documented, named academic argument, not an anonymous discovery. Psychologist Susan Blackmore built this idea into a full theory in her 1999 book The Meme Machine, which Dawkins himself introduced with a foreword.

Blackmore calls the illusion of a unified self the “selfplex,” a bundle of memes that has learned to claim ownership of the mind hosting it, and argues directly that when the selfplex dissolves, “there is no real ‘I’ to care about.” That’s a genuine, serious, carefully argued philosophical position from a credentialed researcher, worth taking seriously as exactly that. It’s also a minority position even within memetics, let alone cognitive science broadly, one many philosophers of mind and neuroscientists have directly disputed rather than confirmed.

Why Serious Scientists Argue About This
The field’s actual academic reception is worth knowing precisely, since it directly complicates any confident version of the tenant metaphor. The Journal of Memetics, the discipline’s own dedicated publication, closed in 2005, and one of its regular contributors, Bruce Edmonds, marked the end with a paper arguing the entire gene-meme comparison had failed to produce testable, substantive results. Physician and researcher Luis Benitez-Bribiesca has gone further, describing memetics as pseudo-scientific dogma in published academic criticism.

None of that means the underlying observations about language, imitation, and culture are worthless, genuine work continues on cultural transmission, narrative psychology, and how ideas spread. It means the specific, dramatic leap, that something separate from you is quietly running the show, isn’t an established scientific conclusion. It’s one contested interpretation among researchers who mostly draw far more modest conclusions from the same observations.

What’s Documented, Read a Different Way
The actual, uncontested facts here are genuinely worth sitting with, and they don’t require concluding that you’re a guest in your own head. Children really do assemble grammar without direct instruction, a documented and remarkable feature of language acquisition that developmental linguists have documented for decades. Catchy songs really do lodge in memory and resist being dismissed, a genuine, ordinary feature of how attention and memory work.

Stories really have shaped human culture more than almost anything else humans have built. None of that requires treating personality as a hostile occupation rather than what most cognitive scientists and philosophers of mind actually describe: a genuinely unified, embodied process, distributed across brain and body, shaped by language and culture the way a river is shaped by its banks, without the banks being a separate creature living inside the water.

A Steadier Way to Hold the Same Questions
Wondering where a thought comes from, why a tune won’t leave, why some ideas feel bigger than the person carrying them, these are genuinely old, genuinely worthwhile questions, and asking them doesn’t require concluding that something else is wearing you.

Even Blackmore’s own more measured later interviews describe the dissolving of a rigid sense of self as something closer to freedom, more room for compassion, less defensiveness, not evidence of a hidden occupant to fear or suspect.

If a thought ever does feel less like yours than usual, persistently, distressingly, that’s worth mentioning to a doctor or therapist as the genuine, human experience it is, not confirmation of a tenant. The mind that notices its own patterns, questions them, and keeps choosing what to do next is still, on the best available evidence, the same one asking the question.
