Who we are
This policy covers monkeyandelf.com, an independent publication investigating the unexplained, operated by Monkey and Elf (“we”, “us”). Monkey and Elf is responsible for the personal data collected through this site. You can reach us at any time through the contact page.
What we collect, and why
When you read
Reading the site does not require an account, a name or an email address. The technical data your browser sends with every visit is described under services that see your visit below.
When you write to us
The contact form asks for your name, your email address, a subject and your message. We use them to read your message, to reply, and when you send a lead, to investigate it. We rely on our legitimate interest in answering the people who write to us. Your message is delivered to our inbox and may also be kept in the site's own database.
When you comment
When you leave a comment, the name, email address and website you enter are stored with it, together with your IP address and browser details, which help catch spam. Your name and comment are public. Your email address is never published. WordPress may send a scrambled version of your email address (a hash) to the Gravatar service to show your profile picture if you have one there. Gravatar's privacy policy is available at automattic.com/privacy. If the comment form offers to remember your details and you agree, a cookie keeps them in your browser for up to a year.
To keep the site running and secure
Like every website, the server that hosts monkeyandelf.com records basic technical details of each request, such as the IP address, time, page requested and browser type, to keep the site secure and working. These logs are held for a limited time by the hosting provider and are not used to identify readers.
Cookies and your consent
When you first visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, a consent message asks whether you allow cookies for analytics and personalised advertising. Nothing that needs your consent runs until you choose.
- Necessary. Cookies and storage the site needs to work, including the record of your consent choice itself. These do not need consent.
- Analytics. Google Analytics, described below. Only with your consent.
- Advertising. Ads served by Mediavine and its partners, described below. Personalised ads only with your consent.
You can change your choice at any time through the privacy settings link at the bottom of the site, or by clearing this site's cookies in your browser, which brings the consent message back on your next visit.
What your browser keeps
Some of the site's features save small pieces of information in your own browser's storage so pages open faster and remember your preferences.
- The list of wings and the newest file, so menus load at once.
- Lists of files for the homepage and archive pages, refreshed every hour or so.
- Your choice between the Files and Index views on archive pages.
None of it identifies you, none of it is sent to us or to anyone else, and clearing your browser's data for this site removes it.
Services that see your visit
Google Analytics
With your consent, Google Analytics measures how many people visit, which files they read, the country and city they visit from, the device and browser they use, and how they arrived. It helps us understand which investigations readers find and follow. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses for visitors in the European Union. Analytics data is kept for the period set in our Google Analytics account, at most 14 months.
Advertising by Mediavine
The ads on this site are served by Mediavine. Where the law requires it, Mediavine and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to show ads based on your interests only with your consent. Ads may still use cookies or similar technology to limit how often an ad appears, to measure delivery and to prevent fraud, where the law allows. Mediavine's own notice, at the end of this page, explains what it collects, who it shares it with and how to opt out.
If you live in a US state that gives you the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal data, use the Do Not Sell or Share My Information link at the bottom of the site, where it is shown.
Google Fonts
The site's typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google's servers, which receive your IP address in order to deliver them.
Embedded content
Some files embed videos or posts from other sites, such as YouTube or X. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other site. Those sites may collect data about you, set cookies and track your interaction with the embed, under their own privacy policies.
Hosting and performance
The site runs on a hosting provider and uses caching and security tools that process the technical request data described above, only to deliver pages and protect the site.
How long we keep it
- Messages are kept as long as we need them to reply and to follow up a lead, then deleted.
- Comments stay with the article they belong to, unless you ask us to remove them.
- Analytics data is kept for at most 14 months.
Who we share it with
We never sell or rent personal data. It is shared only with the services that run the site, as described above, or when the law requires it, for example in response to a valid legal request, or to protect the site and its readers from abuse.
Transfers outside Europe
Google and some other providers may process data in the United States and other countries outside the European Economic Area. Where they do, they rely on the safeguards the law provides for such transfers, such as the EU to US Data Privacy Framework and the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
Your rights
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or another place with similar laws, you have the right to:
- See the personal data we hold about you and receive a copy.
- Have it corrected if it is wrong.
- Have it deleted.
- Restrict or object to how we use it.
- Receive it in a portable format.
- Withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what was done before.
To use any of these rights, write to us through the contact page. We answer within one month. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority in your country.
Children
Monkey and Elf is written for adults and older readers. If you are under 16, please do not send us personal information through the contact form or the comments. If we learn that we hold such information, we delete it.
Changes to this policy
When the way the site handles data changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top is updated. If a change affects how we use information you have already given us, we will say so clearly on the site before it takes effect.
Contact
Questions about this policy, or requests about your data, go through the contact page. Write “Privacy” in the subject line and we will treat it as a privacy request.
Mediavine's advertising notice
Mediavine provides the following notice about the advertising it delivers on this site. It is reproduced here as Mediavine supplies it.
Mediavine Advertising Privacy Notice v. 1.2
Mediavine works with this site to support the delivery of ads that align with your interests. It collects information about your online activities and browsing information, including websites you visit, pages you view, search terms, the apps you use, the language and device you use, location, and emails from newsletter sign ups. This information is then passed to partners to enable them to display interest based advertising to you.
This Notice is specific to Mediavine and explains how Mediavine collects, uses, shares, or sells your personal information when you visit this site or sign up for a newsletter managed by Mediavine. This website must disclose any collection, use, sharing or sale of personal data beyond the services provided by Mediavine in its own privacy notice (above) and comply with relevant privacy laws.
What personal data does Mediavine collect?
Mediavine may collect:
- IP Address (unique address that identifies your computer or phone on the internet)
- Location (country, city, state)
- Operating System (e.g., Windows or Mac)
- Device Information (hardware, platform, location and carrier data)
- Language of the Website or Browser
- Web Browser Type (e.g., Chrome, Firefox or Safari)
- Email address
When you visit this site, Mediavine uses cookies and similar technologies, such as pixels and tags, to collect your information about your behavior on this site and other websites you visit, across your devices. These tools track preferences, website visits and activities, interactions with emails and ads, and evaluate effectiveness of emails and ads and record which ads have been shown to you to enable the delivery of interest based ads on this site. To learn more, please visit https://www.allaboutcookies.org; ICO - What are cookies and similar technologies; https://learnwebanalytics.com/whats-the-difference-between-a-cookie-a-pixel-and-a-tag.
In some cases, Mediavine may manage a site’s newsletter. Mediavine collects your email directly from you through the newsletter sign up form, and will request your consent to use your email for interest based advertising. Your email will be converted into hashed format – a unique set of numbers and letters representing your email – before being sent to partners. If you no longer wish to receive this newsletter, you may unsubscribe at any time using the “Unsubscribe” button.
Does Mediavine share or sell my personal information for interest based advertising
Yes, Mediavine will use, share, license, sell or otherwise disclose your personal information to our partners to enable interest based advertising to be displayed to you on this site. Through the bidstream, an online marketplace, Mediavine shares data, such as ad location, site content, and your personal information with advertisers. Using this information, advertisers bid for ad space, and the winning bidder gets to display their ad to you on this site.
Mediavine may share your personal data with partners to create a universal (unique) identifier linked to your online behavior and preferences. This identifier is added to the bid request to improve the targeting of interest based ads. Mediavine and its partners may also combine your personal data collected from your interaction with this site with your data that they have collected from other sources to create a profile of your interests and behaviors to provide interest based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers, and applications. Mediavine could also license your personal data from its partners to enrich the information in its bid request to advertisers.
