The Blood Type That Spawned an Entire Mythology

Roughly 15 percent of people carry a blood type missing a single protein most humans have. That absence has a precise medical history, a well-documented genetic explanation, and, separately, an entire mythology built on top of it involving fallen angels, alien hybrids, and hidden royal bloodlines.

All three of those things are real. Only the first two are true.

The Basque population of the western Pyrenees carries the highest concentration of Rh-negative blood documented anywhere in the world, with phenotype frequencies commonly cited between 30 and 35 percent and underlying allele frequency estimates reaching as high as 47 percent in some genomic studies, roughly four times the global rate. Population geneticists explain this through founder effects and long-term genetic isolation rather than any exotic origin: the Basque language is a genuine linguistic isolate, unrelated to any other European language family, and Basque populations show a documented degree of ancestral continuity that largely escaped the major Indo-European migrations that reshaped the genetics of most of the rest of the continent. The leap from documented genetics to “chosen bloodline” has a traceable history of its own, built by a specific, identifiable set of writers rather than emerging from the science itself. British writer Nicholas de Vere, who claimed leadership of an organization he called the “Dragon Court,” wrote extensively from the 1990s onward about what he termed the “Grail bloodline,” asserting that certain aristocratic families carried inherited traits, including Rh-negative blood, tracing back to non-human ancestors. His work has been dismissed by mainstream historians and geneticists alike but has circulated widely in esoteric and royal-bloodline literature since. More recently, YouTube personality Robert Sepehr, who describes himself as an anthropologist without holding a relevant academic degree or affiliation, has been one of the more visible modern promoters of Rh-negative “elite bloodline” content, part of a broader ecosystem of similar claims across alternative media platforms.

The specific statistic sometimes cited linking Rh-negative blood to alien abduction reports, that some 35 to 54 percent of self-reported abductees carry the blood type, traces to small, non-peer-reviewed surveys conducted within UFO research circles, including work by researchers Kathleen Marden and Denise Stoner, rather than to any controlled scientific study with a properly matched comparison group. A survey of self-selected respondents within an already self-selected community isn’t evidence of a biological marker. It’s a data point almost guaranteed to reflect who chose to respond, not any underlying population-wide pattern.

Why the Story Found Such Fertile Ground

The mythology’s staying power isn’t hard to understand once you see how many genuinely real, genuinely unusual facts it has to work with. A real, documented reproductive danger between certain parent combinations. A real, striking geographic clustering in a population with a real, unexplained linguistic isolate. A real evolutionary puzzle about why a reproductively costly trait persists at all. Each of those facts is true and independently interesting, and each one has been available for a writer inclined toward mythology to reach for, the same pattern seen in how other genuinely unusual but ordinary biological or historical facts get built into elaborate hidden-bloodline narratives once enough genuinely strange true details accumulate in one place.

None of this needs a hidden bloodline to be worth understanding closely. A 1940 discovery that seemed, at the time, like a minor immunological curiosity turned out to explain a devastating and previously mysterious cause of infant death, and the treatment developed from it remains standard medical practice today. The genetics behind who carries the trait, and why it concentrates so dramatically in one specific, linguistically isolated European population, is real, documented, and still actively studied by population geneticists asking genuinely open questions about selection and persistence. The bloodline mythology built on top of all of that traces to specific, named writers working from the 1990s onward, not to anything in the biology itself.
