A room somewhere in the apparatus of American intelligence, and sitting across from the officials, not generals, not scientists, not the journalists who have spent decades filing FOIA requests into the void, but pastors. Evangelical leaders with congregations numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Men who manage, on any given Sunday, the psychological architecture of a significant portion of the American interior.
The officials told them something. The pastors were asked to be ready to tell their people something else.
Perry Stone, a Tennessee-based evangelist with an audience large enough to constitute a small nation, described the meeting afterward with the careful language of a man who has been asked to be careful. Intelligence officials, he said, discussed non-human intelligence. Entities that do not originate from Earth. Biological descriptions that some in the room apparently found difficult to process. Reverse-engineered technology that operates outside the physics currently taught in any accredited institution. The purpose of the briefing, Stone suggested, was crowd management at civilizational scale. When the public announcement arrives, the pastors are expected to function as shock absorbers. Keep the congregation employed. Keep them consuming. Keep the economy running while the foundations of the agreed-upon reality shift beneath everyone’s feet.
The officials chose pastors over journalists. That choice is the story.
The February Order
On February 19, 2026, Donald Trump issued a directive to the Pentagon and to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The instruction, characteristically blunt in its public framing, pointed toward full disclosure of classified materials relating to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. Trump described the forthcoming files as among the most significant in human history.
Politicians do not typically traffic in that register when the subject is prosaic.
The political landscape surrounding this moment has a specific texture worth mapping. J.D. Vance, asked about the nature of the phenomena, suggested the entities involved carry demonic rather than biological properties. Anna Paulina Luna, a sitting congresswoman, referenced the Book of Enoch in open session, a second-temple Jewish text describing two hundred fallen angels descending to Earth and taking human women, producing a hybrid race of giants whose violence precipitated the flood. Luna’s argument was that what the twentieth century classified as extraterrestrial the ancient world classified as the Watchers, and that the classification changed while the phenomenon did not.
Barack Obama, careful as ever, confirmed only that objects exist in American airspace for which the government has no explanation, then declined to specify the depth of his own briefing on the matter.
Three figures from across the political spectrum. Three different vocabularies arriving at the same coordinate. The phenomenon exists. The classification of what it is has become a theological and political emergency simultaneously. The briefing of the pastors was not peripheral preparation. It was the most honest signal in the sequence.
The Great Delusion
Bishop Alan DiDio and others working in the space where evangelical theology meets intelligence community leaks have been using a specific phrase for several years. The Great Delusion. The term originates in Second Thessalonians, a Pauline letter describing the conditions preceding the end of the age. God sends a strong delusion, the text reads, so that those who did not believe the truth would believe the lie.
The structure of the warning is precise. The delusion arrives as something convincing. Something that presents itself as revelation, as liberation from old ignorance, as the answer to questions that established religion failed to answer satisfactorily. The fear among the clergy engaging seriously with the disclosure timeline runs as follows. When the announcement comes, and the evidence arrives in whatever form the officials have prepared, a significant portion of the global population will receive beings of apparent technological superiority as something close to gods. As creators. As the answer to the origin question that Genesis provided for two millennia and that secular science has been providing in degraded form ever since.
The concern is that the beings in question may be aware of this receptivity and may have been cultivating it.
The Book of Enoch sits outside the Protestant and Catholic canons. It survived in Ethiopic translation and was recovered for Western scholarship in the eighteenth century. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church treats it as scripture. The Dead Sea Scrolls included multiple fragments, suggesting its authority in the second-temple period was significant. Its account of the Watchers, the two hundred angels who descended to Mount Hermon, taught humanity forbidden arts, and produced offspring whose violence corrupted the Earth, reads in the current context less like mythology and more like a classified briefing from a previous civilization that had already been through what we are approaching.
Luna read it into the congressional record. That is a specific kind of signal.
The Spielberg Inversion
Stanley Kubrick spent the last years of his life, according to accounts that circulate in specific circles with specific levels of documentation, aware that certain agreements existed between the creative industry and the intelligence apparatus regarding the gradual normalization of specific categories of information. The moon landing footage, in this telling, was processed through Kubrick’s technical expertise to ensure the visual record matched what the public needed to receive rather than what the instruments recorded. The truth was present in the images but the images were managed.
The Spielberg inversion runs in the opposite direction. The 2026 film, announced with the familiar apparatus of Hollywood event marketing, arrives at the precise moment the classified files are being prepared for release. The argument among researchers who track the relationship between entertainment and disclosure policy runs like this. If the actual evidence, when released, resembles what cinema has spent eighty years depicting, the population will process it as derivative of fiction rather than as the origin of it. The disorientation that genuine contact would produce gets neutralized in advance by the familiarity of the imagery. You cannot be shocked by something you have already seen in a theater.
Kubrick made the fiction look like documentation. Spielberg makes the documentation look like fiction. The desired outcome in both cases is a public that processes the event without losing the ability to go to work on Monday.
The pastors serve the same function with different tools.
What the Education System Was For
The argument that runs beneath the surface of the disclosure conversation, the one that the more careful researchers approach obliquely and the less careful ones state directly, concerns the purpose of the epistemological architecture that has governed Western education for approximately two hundred years.
The round earth model, heliocentrism, the vast and indifferent cosmos of modern cosmology, the Darwinian account of human origins, the physics of spacetime that makes faster-than-light travel theoretically impossible and therefore makes contact with other civilizations reassuringly improbable. Each of these frameworks, taken together, produces a specific psychological outcome. The human being is a biological accident on a minor planet in an unremarkable galaxy, separated from any other form of complex life by distances that make relationship impossible. The universe is large and empty and indifferent and we are briefly here before we are not.
This framework produces a population that accepts its isolation as a physical fact rather than as a managed condition. A population that finds the suggestion of contact not threatening but simply implausible, calibrated by the scale of the distances involved to dismiss the possibility without examining the evidence.
When the distances turn out to be less relevant than the physics suggested, when the phenomena turn out to have been documented and suppressed rather than absent, the entire epistemological structure that made the suppression invisible becomes visible simultaneously. The disclosure of the phenomenon is also the disclosure of the system that concealed it. And that second disclosure is the one the pastors are being briefed to manage.
The Convergence
Every thread in this sequence arrives at the same point.
The intelligence officials chose clergy as their first audience because clergy understand that the management of existential crisis is a pastoral function. The officials know what the evidence shows. They have presumably been living with it for decades, in compartments of varying classification, and they have watched the psychological literature on the impact of contact scenarios accumulate without being able to act on it. They know that the announcement, when it comes, will operate differently on different populations. The secular cosmopolitan will process it through one framework. The rural evangelical will process it through another. The officials went to the evangelical leadership because that is the population they are most concerned about.
The theological response has already been prepared. The entities are demonic. The contact is a spiritual trap. The Book of Enoch anticipated this and was excluded from the canon precisely because its information was considered too destabilizing for general circulation. The role of the church in the post-disclosure period is to provide a framework that absorbs the shock without dissolving the social structure that depends on a population capable of maintaining normal economic function.
Whether the entities are biological, dimensional, demonic, or some category that none of the available vocabularies adequately describe, the officials and the pastors agree on one thing. The shaky construction of the agreed-upon history is ending. The institutions built on it will either adapt or become the first casualties of what comes next.
The files are being prepared. The pastors have been briefed. The film is in production.
The question now is what the announcement is designed to make you ready for, and what it is designed to make you stop looking at in the moment you receive it.
