The ‘Anti-Gravity’ UFO Theory Was Tested in a Vacuum. It Failed

The core physics claim behind this theory, that high-voltage electric fields directly manipulate gravity, was tested decades ago and didn’t survive the test. When researchers ran the same experiment in a vacuum, where the proposed alternative explanation couldn’t operate, the thrust disappeared entirely.

Paul Hill Was Real. His Theory Was His Own.

Paul Richard Hill (1909 to 1990) genuinely worked at NACA and its successor NASA from 1939 to 1970, retiring as Associate Chief of the Applied Materials and Physics Division at NASA’s Langley Research Center. Following a UFO sighting in the early 1950s, he spent much of the rest of his career unofficially collecting and analyzing sighting reports on his own time, and completed a manuscript proposing that UFO flight characteristics could be explained through a hypothesized repulsive force field, published posthumously by his family in 1995 as Unconventional Flying Objects: A Scientific Analysis.

Hill’s credentials are genuine, and the book represents a serious, technically detailed attempt by a trained aerodynamicist to work through reported flight characteristics mathematically. It’s also worth being precise about what it is: Hill’s own personal hypothesis, developed independently and never subjected to the kind of independent experimental replication that would move it from an individual engineer’s proposed framework into an established finding. NASA never adopted, funded, or endorsed the force-field model described in the book. That distinction matters, because the rest of this theory treats Hill’s personal hypothesis as if it were a confirmed diagnostic result.

The Electrogravitics Claim Was Actually Tested, and Failed

This needs a direct correction, because it’s the specific claim that’s been most thoroughly checked. In the 1920s, inventor Thomas Townsend Brown, working with physicist Paul Alfred Biefeld, discovered a genuine and repeatable phenomenon: applying high voltage to an asymmetric capacitor produces measurable thrust toward the smaller electrode. Brown interpreted this as evidence of a direct link between electricity and gravity and spent much of his career promoting it as “electrogravitics.” The effect itself, now called the Biefeld-Brown effect, is real and well documented. What it actually is turned out to be something else entirely.

In 1990, US Air Force researcher R.L. Talley tested a Biefeld-Brown style capacitor inside a vacuum chamber, reasoning that if the effect were genuinely gravitational, it should work identically whether or not air was present. Even at driving voltages up to 19 kilovolts in a near-total vacuum, no thrust was produced. A 2004 analysis published in the AIAA Journal by physicist Martin Tajmar, titled plainly “Biefeld-Brown Effect: Misinterpretation of Corona Wind Phenomena,” and a separate NASA Technical Reports Server study the same year reached the same conclusion through independent means: the thrust is produced by ionized air molecules physically colliding with neutral air molecules and transferring momentum, a well-understood process called electrohydrodynamic or ion wind propulsion, the same principle used in modern “ionocraft” lifters and EHD cooling systems. In a vacuum, with no air present to ionize, there’s no wind to produce, and no thrust results. That’s not a matter of interpretation. It’s a directly falsifiable prediction that failed the test.

What’s Actually Unverified in the Rest of the Claim

Several other specific details in this theory don’t trace back to a clear, checkable source. A claim attributed to French Space Agency physicist André Marion analyzing 1989-1990 Belgian UFO wave photographs in 2002 circulates widely in UFO literature, but no peer-reviewed publication, agency report, or primary documentation of that specific analysis has surfaced independently of secondary retellings. Thomas Valone’s writing on electrogravitics reflects his own independent research and advocacy rather than a mainstream engineering consensus, and Harold Puthoff’s actual published physics work, while genuinely credentialed, doesn’t establish gravitational shielding inside historical UFO reports the way it’s often summarized as doing.

The broader claim, that a 1955 New York Herald Tribune story on gravity-control research triggered a coordinated, permanent government and media suppression campaign to protect the petrodollar system, has no supporting documentary evidence beyond its own repetition. Genuine, publicly funded aerospace research into unconventional propulsion concepts, including electrogravitics, did occur in the mid-20th century and quietly wound down as the underlying physics failed to hold up, the ordinary fate of a promising-looking early result that further testing didn’t support. That’s a considerably less dramatic explanation than an enforced global energy embargo, but it’s the one that matches what happened to the Biefeld-Brown effect specifically once anyone actually tested it in the right conditions.

What’s Actually Left

None of this needs an invented energy cartel to be worth remembering. Paul Hill was a genuinely credentialed engineer who took an unusual personal interest seriously enough to write a technically ambitious, posthumously published book, real intellectual history in its own right. Townsend Brown discovered a real, repeatable electrical effect that turned out to be electrohydrodynamic propulsion rather than gravity control, itself a legitimate and still-useful area of applied physics today. What doesn’t hold up is the leap from those two real threads to a coordinated, permanent suppression of a working antigravity drive. The actual historical record shows a promising hypothesis that got tested properly, decades ago, and didn’t survive contact with a vacuum chamber.
