Since 2023, a striking story has been circulating online: reports of towering, golden-robed beings called the Guardians of the World, said to have appeared to ordinary people across dozens of countries with the same unsettling message, that humanity has pushed the planet too far, and a new flood is coming. The story is vivid and consistent. It is also, on every point that can actually be checked, untraceable to any named witness, dated report, or verifiable source.
Here is what’s being claimed, and what actually holds up.
The Guardians’ Unsettling Presence
As the story is told, the Guardians appear as towering, genderless figures, nearly ten feet tall, wrapped in shimmering golden robes that obscure almost everything about their physical form. Those who claim to have seen them describe dark, almost obsidian skin beneath the robes, and eyes that glow with a steady, piercing gold light. The beings reportedly speak in the listener’s own native language, in a tone described as condescending, almost judicial, as though weighing the person, and by extension humanity itself, on some invisible scale. Witnesses say the experience leaves them paralyzed, unable to move or respond, while visions of a catastrophic future flood their minds uninvited.
It’s worth being direct about what can actually be verified here: nothing. No named witness, no dated incident report, no local news coverage, and no independent investigation of any specific encounter could be located anywhere, despite the story’s claim that sightings span the United States, Montenegro, Nigeria, Peru, Finland, and beyond. Every detail of the beings’ appearance and manner comes from unattributed secondhand paraphrase, not from any traceable original account.
Visions of a World Reclaimed
What’s supposed to make these accounts compelling is their consistency: a farmer in rural Serbia and a teacher in urban France, the story goes, describe strikingly similar visions, of deserted cities gone silent, overtaken by forest and vine, of airfields and railway stations and highways crumbling as nature reclaims them, humanity’s works erased as though the Earth itself were scrubbing them away. Believers read this as a warning rather than a hallucination, a picture of what’s coming if nothing changes.
This is also where the claim runs into a specific problem: this exact kind of vision, civilization abandoned and swallowed by nature, is one of the most common tropes in modern apocalyptic fiction and art, appearing in everything from post-apocalyptic films to stock photography to AI image generators. A vivid mental image shared by many people isn’t independent corroboration when the image itself is already culturally ubiquitous.
Ancient Overseers of Earth
According to the story, the Guardians aren’t new. They’re described as ancient overseers, waking from a long slumber to carry out a “protocol” they’ve supposedly enacted three times before across Earth’s deep past, each time to cleanse the planet of a species that had grown too dangerous. In their current warning, they cite a figure: 18 million plant and animal species lost to human expansion, a planet plundered past its limit, its ecosystems pushed to breaking.
Species loss is a serious, well-studied concern. Conservation biologists track it closely, and organizations like the IUCN Red List publish detailed, peer-reviewed data on extinction risk. But no biodiversity database or scientific body has ever produced or endorsed the specific figure of 18 million species, and no source ties that number to any actual statement from any entity, human or otherwise. It’s a number attached to a legitimate concern with nothing underneath it.
Echoes of Ancient Cleansings
The story then reaches back further still. It claims that millions of years ago, an intelligent reptilian civilization, building toward a technocratic society, was wiped out “in a rain of fire” by the Guardians to make way for a new cycle of life. Later, it says, giant “technomages” grew warlike and built destructive energy weapons, their ruins eventually discovered by the Atlanteans, prompting the Guardians to intervene a second time with a great flood, the same flood that supposedly later doomed Atlantis itself for its own technological hubris.
None of this has any support in the actual fossil or archaeological record. No paleontologist has found evidence of an intelligent reptilian civilization at any point in Earth’s deep past, and no excavation has ever recovered artifacts consistent with an advanced pre-human technological society, energy weapons or otherwise. The fossil record has been studied and independently cross-checked by thousands of researchers across more than a century, and it shows a continuous, well-documented record of biological evolution with no gap for a lost high-technology civilization to fit into.
Humanity at a Crossroads
In the story’s present-day framing, humanity now stands where the reptilians and the Atlanteans once stood. The Guardians reportedly say we had our chance to change course, but that window has closed: over 85 percent of humanity, they claim, now carries what they call “destructive energy,” a force that, left unchecked, will trigger the next cleansing.
There’s no way to measure “destructive energy” in any person, let alone 85 percent of eight billion people, and no source of any kind, psychological, spiritual, or otherwise, has published a methodology for doing so. The figure functions the same way the 18-million-species number does: precise-sounding, unsourced, and unfalsifiable.
The Threat of a New Flood
Asked what form the coming “cleansing” will take, the story turns to water: witnesses reportedly describe visions of vast, unstoppable waves engulfing cities. One account, attributed to an unnamed clergyman in Mexico, is quoted directly:
“I was shown a sign. These beings, whatever they are, hold dominion over everything on this planet. They warned that if we do not stop destroying the Earth, a new flood will come. It is coming.”
No name, parish, city, or date accompanies this quote, and no independent report corroborates it. An unattributed quote is not evidence of an encounter, it’s a sentence someone wrote.
What is well documented, and genuinely worth knowing, is that flood warnings of exactly this kind, a divine or supernatural power punishing humanity’s failures with a deluge, are among the oldest and most widespread stories humans tell. The Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, the biblical account of Noah, Greek mythology’s Deucalion, and comparable flood narratives from Hindu, Mesoamerican, and dozens of other independent traditions all follow this same basic shape. Comparative mythologists and geologists have proposed grounded explanations for why this pattern recurs so consistently across cultures that never had contact with one another: post-glacial sea level rise at the end of the last Ice Age, and the simple, repeated experience of catastrophic river flooding across many of the early civilizations that first wrote these stories down. A shared human experience, not a shared visitor, plausibly explains why so many cultures independently arrived at the same kind of story.

The story doesn’t end purely in dread. Its visions of abandoned, forest-reclaimed cities are framed as double-edged: haunting, but also a kind of rebirth, air growing clean, nature healing. It’s worth naming plainly why a story shaped exactly this way, an authoritative non-human figure, a vision of collapse, a moral call to change, feels so compelling regardless of whether any of it happened. Researchers who study contactee and new religious movements have documented this same basic narrative template recurring continuously since at least the mid-20th century, precisely because it takes something genuinely true and pressing, documented concern about biodiversity loss and climate change, and channels it through an unverifiable messenger instead of through the extensive, named, peer-reviewed environmental science that already exists on these exact subjects.
A Call to Reflect and Act
The concern underneath this story, that human activity is driving measurable ecological damage at scale, is genuine and well documented by climate scientists and conservation biologists whose names, institutions, and data are all a search away. That documented concern doesn’t need a golden-robed messenger or an unverifiable prophecy to be worth acting on. It’s already sitting in plain view, published, sourced, and considerably more specific than anything the Guardians are said to have offered.
