It’s the documented history of how a nineteenth-century mystic’s racial hierarchy became the working theory behind an SS-sponsored expedition, and how the same men who measured Tibetan skulls in search of “Aryan” origins later measured the skulls of murdered concentration camp prisoners for an SS anatomy collection.
Presenting “root race” cosmology as an intriguing esoteric framework, without that history attached, leaves out the reason it’s remembered at all.
Where the “Root Race” System Actually Comes From
Helena Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society, laid out the root-race system in her 1888 book The Secret Doctrine: successive stages of human spiritual and physical development, from ethereal early races through Lemurian and Atlantean stages to a fifth, current race Blavatsky explicitly identified as the “Aryan” race, with a sixth still to come. This wasn’t an incidental detail she’d have been surprised to see racialized later. Blavatsky’s own text ranks the root races hierarchically, placing what she called the Aryan race above others she described as evolutionary throwbacks, language that drew directly and explicitly on nineteenth-century racial pseudoscience already in wide circulation. The “spiritual stages” framing doesn’t remove the hierarchy. It’s built into the original system.
What the Ahnenerbe Actually Did With It
The Ahnenerbe was a real SS research institute, founded by Heinrich Himmler in 1935, with an explicit, documented mission: researching the deep origins and supposed superiority of the “Aryan race.” This wasn’t a fringe curiosity within the organization, it was the Ahnenerbe’s founding purpose. In 1938, Himmler sponsored zoologist and SS officer Ernst Schäfer to lead an expedition to Tibet, motivated substantially by the belief that Tibet might hold evidence of an ancient Aryan homeland, a theory Blavatsky’s own root-race framework had helped popularize decades earlier. Team member Bruno Beger, an SS anthropologist, spent the expedition taking detailed physical measurements and plaster casts of living Tibetan people’s skulls and faces, applying the racial pseudoscience of craniometry in the field, searching for physical evidence to support the Aryan-origin theory. This was documented, government-funded research explicitly built on the premise that root-race doctrine described real, ranked biological history.
Where That Same Methodology Led
This is the part of the record that makes the difference between interesting mysticism and something that needs to be named plainly. Bruno Beger, the same anthropologist who measured living Tibetan skulls in 1938 in service of root-race theory, went on to select 86 Jewish concentration camp prisoners at Auschwitz in 1943 for what the SS termed a comparative anatomical skeleton collection, transferred to Natzweiler-Struthof, where all 86 were murdered specifically so their remains could be measured and catalogued for the same racial-origin research program. Beger was convicted after the war for his role in these killings. That’s not a loosely connected historical footnote. It’s the same racial-pseudoscience framework, the same measuring calipers, in some cases the same individual researcher, moving from a “spiritual” search for humanity’s ancient origins directly into a documented atrocity. The root-race doctrine wasn’t a neutral cosmology that Nazi ideology happened to borrow. In its actual twentieth-century application, it was operational.
Why the Specific Numbers and Details Deserve Scrutiny, Not Belief
None of the specific claims in wide circulation today, fifty-meter luminous spheres as a first race, thirty-meter “boneless” second-race beings, precise 500-year sixth-race lifespans, trace to any archaeological, fossil, or documentary evidence of any kind. They trace entirely to Blavatsky’s own claimed clairvoyant access to the “Akashic Records,” an unfalsifiable psychic source she alone claimed to read, later elaborated by successive generations of Theosophical writers adding further invented specificity. There is no fossil record, no genetic evidence, and no archaeological find anywhere consistent with any of these described races or their claimed physical scale. Treating these numbers as a body of hidden knowledge worth taking seriously, separate from their real documented history, is exactly the move that let the underlying racial hierarchy travel from a Victorian mystic’s book into a government research program four decades later.
Why This History Matters More Than the Cosmology
The actual, important story here isn’t a hidden truth about humanity’s spiritual destiny. It’s a documented case study in how quickly an invented racial hierarchy, dressed in the language of ancient wisdom and spiritual evolution rather than biology, can be picked up by a state apparatus and put to lethal use. Blavatsky’s system provided vocabulary and apparent intellectual respectability for a racial ranking that nineteenth-century biology alone couldn’t yet fully supply. The Ahnenerbe supplied the institutional funding and the imperial reach to go looking for physical confirmation. Beger supplied the methodology that carried directly from a Tibetan expedition to a concentration camp. Each step is documented. None of it required the root races to be real, only for enough people in positions of power to believe, or find it useful to claim, that they were.
