No Zettabyte Transmission Exists. What 3I/ATLAS Actually Sent Was Nothing

No zettabyte transmission was detected from 3I/ATLAS. No credible artificial radio signal was detected at all. What astronomers actually found was something stranger in a different way: a genuinely interstellar comet whose chemistry suggests it may have formed as long ago as 12 billion years, and whose passage was watched by an unusually large network of telescopes and spacecraft. The “zettabyte transmission” has no identifiable observatory, dataset, paper or named detection behind it.

The second claim in this story has an even older origin. The idea that the United Nations created an official extraterrestrial-contact position and eventually transferred that authority to the Pope can be traced back to a sensational 2010 newspaper report about Malaysian astrophysicist Mazlan Othman, then director of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. Othman herself denied the story almost immediately. Fifteen years later, the same narrative has been rebuilt around 3I/ATLAS, a completely separate event. Put the original documents back on the table and the mystery changes shape: one extraordinary natural object, one series of genuine scientific searches, one spectacular transmission claim with no source, and one recycled piece of media folklore that never became the UN policy it was said to be.

3I/ATLAS Really Is Extraordinary

This site has already followed 3I/ATLAS’s trajectory and the major claims surrounding it, but the evidence has continued to accumulate since its discovery on July 1, 2025. The object is only the third confirmed interstellar visitor ever identified passing through our solar system, after 1I/’Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov. Its closest approach to the Sun occurred in late October 2025 at roughly 1.36 astronomical units, and its closest approach to Earth came on December 19 at about 1.7 AU, roughly 270 million kilometers. It never made a close approach to Earth in the first place, which eliminates one of the stranger claims sometimes attached to its trajectory: that it somehow deliberately avoided us.

NASA and its partners had an unusually large observational campaign running during the passage. NASA reported observations from a fleet of missions and telescopes, including Hubble, Lucy, STEREO, SOHO, PUNCH, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and other Mars assets. Those observations repeatedly showed a coma, dust and gas production, and other characteristics expected from an active comet. NASA’s November 2025 campaign alone assembled imagery from twelve NASA assets, giving researchers multiple independent views of the object rather than a single telescope image on which to build an interpretation.

Then came the chemistry. JWST observations detected water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane and other species in the coma. The first direct detection of methane in an interstellar object showed that 3I/ATLAS is chemically unusual, including an unusually high carbon-dioxide-to-water ratio. But chemical strangeness isn’t the same thing as engineering. These observations describe a volatile-rich comet undergoing outgassing as sunlight warms it, exactly the sort of physical process astronomers expect to see in an active icy body.

The most remarkable result arrived in June 2026, when Martin Cordiner and colleagues published isotopic measurements in Nature. The comet’s water has an unusually high deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio, while its carbon isotope ratios are also extreme compared with known Solar System comets. The researchers concluded that these signatures point to formation at temperatures below roughly 30 kelvin in a relatively metal-poor environment and suggested that 3I/ATLAS may have accreted as long ago as 12 billion years. That doesn’t mean astronomers have measured its age with a literal cosmic stopwatch; the age is an inference from its isotopic composition and models of Galactic chemical evolution. But the implication is extraordinary: 3I/ATLAS may be a preserved fragment of a planetary system that formed extremely early in the history of the Galaxy.

In other words, there was never any need to make the comet artificial to make it astonishing.

The Zettabyte Transmission Has No Evidentiary Trail

The claim that 3I/ATLAS transmitted a “zettabyte” of information collapses at the first question any journalist or scientist should ask: who detected it? There’s no identified radio observatory, SETI team, space agency, published paper, observation log or publicly available dataset establishing that such a transmission occurred. More importantly, dedicated searches were actually conducted, and they found no credible artificial signal.

Breakthrough Listen observed 3I/ATLAS with multiple facilities. The Allen Telescope Array searched between 1 and 9 GHz and found no signal worthy of follow-up, placing limits on hypothetical radio transmitters in the surveyed ranges. MeerKAT searched for technosignatures while simultaneously detecting the comet’s expected hydroxyl emission. And on December 18, 2025, less than a day before the comet’s closest approach to Earth, Breakthrough Listen pointed the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope at 3I/ATLAS across four receiver bands covering approximately 1 to 12 GHz. The Green Bank analysis found no candidate technosignatures down to about 100 milliwatts of equivalent isotropic radiated power.

The search didn’t stop there. A separate FAST campaign observed 3I/ATLAS on four dates between October 2025 and January 2026, including around perihelion and its closest approach to Earth. Researchers reported no credible narrowband radio technosignature and placed their own limits on hypothetical transmitters. The result is exactly what a scientific search is supposed to produce when the hypothesis isn’t supported: not “proof that aliens do not exist,” but a progressively tighter constraint on what kind of transmitter could have been hiding in the observations.

That distinction matters. A null result cannot prove that no extraterrestrial technology exists anywhere. A transmitter could use frequencies that weren’t searched, signal structures the algorithms weren’t designed to recognize, or simply remain silent. But it does establish something much narrower and much more defensible: within the frequency ranges, sensitivities and search methods actually used, astronomers did not find evidence of an artificial transmission from 3I/ATLAS.

What About the Artificial-Origin Hypothesis?

There was genuine scientific speculation about whether 3I/ATLAS could conceivably be technological. Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb discussed that possibility publicly, as he has with previous interstellar objects. That discussion was legitimate because interstellar objects are rare and technosignatures are a legitimate field of astronomical research. Even Breakthrough Listen explicitly notes that interstellar probes would, in principle, be a possible technosignature target. The important point is that looking for an artificial explanation isn’t the same thing as finding one.

And the observational record has moved strongly toward the natural interpretation. 3I/ATLAS has displayed a coma and ordinary cometary activity, produced identifiable molecular species, followed a hyperbolic trajectory through the Solar System and shown no confirmed technosignature in repeated searches. The Nature isotopic study adds another layer: rather than revealing machinery, the object carries chemical evidence about the environment in which an ancient icy planetesimal formed. The object is extraordinary precisely because it’s a sample of another planetary system, not because astronomers have found a machine hiding inside it.

The UN “Alien Ambassador” Story Was Already Denied in 2010

The second half of the claim has an entirely different history. In September 2010, British media reported that the United Nations was preparing to make Mazlan Othman, then head of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, humanity’s official point of contact for extraterrestrial life. The story was dramatic enough to spread internationally almost immediately. But the supposed appointment never happened.

Othman herself denied it. In an email quoted by The Guardian, she responded to the claim with a remarkably concise sentence: “It sounds really cool but I have to deny it.” The Royal Society, where she was supposedly preparing to discuss the new alien-contact policy, also knew nothing about such an announcement. The actual conference concerned near-Earth objects. The Guardian reported that the UN referred questions to UNOOSA and that the office’s real responsibilities included matters such as near-Earth objects and space debris, not acting as an extraterrestrial diplomatic command center.

That doesn’t mean humanity has no discussions about how governments should respond to the discovery of extraterrestrial life. It does. Scientists, ethicists, space agencies and international organizations have considered the problem for decades. But a general question, what would humanity do if we detected extraterrestrial life?, isn’t evidence that the United Nations created a secret office with authority over first contact.

Where the Pope Enters, and Where the Evidence Stops

The claim that this authority was later transferred to the Vatican, or specifically to the Pope, requires a documented institutional action: a UN resolution, General Assembly decision, Secretary-General announcement, UNOOSA directive, Vatican agreement or some other primary record establishing the transfer. None is identified here. The story instead appears to work backwards from a conclusion: because the Vatican has held serious discussions about the possibility of extraterrestrial life, it’s assumed that the Vatican must have inherited a formal UN role.

That’s not how institutional authority works. The Vatican Observatory has real astronomers. The Catholic Church has real theologians who have discussed extraterrestrial life. Jesuit astronomers have publicly considered questions about life beyond Earth. None of those facts creates a UN mandate. A scientist affiliated with a religious institution discussing extraterrestrial life isn’t the same thing as the United Nations transferring diplomatic authority over alien contact to the Pope.

Three Separate Claims Were Welded Into One Story

Once the chronology is reconstructed, the architecture of the story becomes visible. First came a real interstellar object. Then came speculation about whether any interstellar visitor could theoretically be artificial. Then came a spectacular claim of a gigantic transmission that has no identified source. Separately, there was a 2010 media story about an alleged UN alien ambassador that was immediately denied by the woman supposedly being appointed. At some later point, these unrelated narratives were connected, and the resulting story acquired a Vatican ending that requires another unsupported institutional leap.

The problem isn’t that the individual ingredients are impossible. Interstellar probes are physically conceivable. SETI is a legitimate scientific discipline. Governments really would face difficult questions if extraterrestrial intelligence were detected. The Vatican really does employ astronomers and discuss astrobiology. The United Nations really does coordinate aspects of international space policy. Every ingredient is real enough to make the composite story sound plausible.

But plausibility isn’t provenance.

What the Evidence Actually Says About 3I/ATLAS

The evidence now forms an unusually dense chain. NASA and other agencies observed the object from multiple spacecraft and telescopes. Its coma and outgassing were documented. JWST detected multiple volatile species, including methane. Radio observatories conducted targeted searches for technosignatures and found none. FAST independently found no credible narrowband signal. And isotopic measurements published in Nature point toward formation in an extremely cold, ancient and chemically distinctive environment, potentially billions of years before the Solar System formed.

None of that proves a philosophical negative such as “aliens are impossible.” Science almost never works that way. It establishes what the available observations support and what they don’t. At present, the observations support an ancient interstellar comet displaying natural cometary activity. They don’t support a detected transmitter, a zettabyte data dump, a deployed probe network or an engineered structure.

The Data Nobody Transmitted Was Never the Point

There’s something almost frustrating about the fact that the real 3I/ATLAS story is less cinematic than the invented one. We didn’t intercept a message containing the accumulated data of an extraterrestrial civilization. We didn’t discover a machine hiding near Jupiter. We didn’t watch an alien spacecraft deliberately evade Earth.

We watched a piece of another planetary system pass through ours.

And its chemistry may be telling us that the object formed astonishingly early in the history of the Galaxy, under conditions unlike those that produced the comets we know at home. That’s not a disappointment. It’s arguably more important. For the first time, astronomy has access to material that was assembled around another star and then delivered, naturally, into our own cosmic neighborhood.

The zettabyte story adds nothing to that discovery because it has no evidentiary trail. The Pope story adds nothing because its supposed institutional origin was denied before 3I/ATLAS even existed. What remains after the mythology is removed is not an ordinary comet in the dismissive sense. It’s something genuinely rare: an ancient visitor from another planetary system whose physical and chemical history can be studied from Earth. That’s the part worth following. Not the transmission nobody detected. Not the UN appointment that never happened. Not the Vatican authority that has never been demonstrated. The real story is sitting in the data already collected, and unlike the zettabyte, that data actually exists.
