Every Thursday, Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.
Culled from the week’s past shows, these tracks have the Gimme Radio DJs’ seal of approval, have the listeners demanding more and the Gimme office buzzing.
CULT OF EXTINCTION – Eminated from the Cosmic Darkness
War metal from the bottom of the pit courtesy of the one man named Void, following up the Black Nuclear Magick Attack demo with this full length Ritual in the Absolute Absence of Light. Busted up cymbal crashes open a kaleidoscope of horror and brutality, looped growls, thundering rhythmic pummel and blackened soul music for the ages.
THONIAN HORDE – Downfall
“Black and Roll”, party black metal? As scathing and evil as the vocals slide around in this, there’s a somewhat jovial air to these sounds. Fist punching riffs, fast-mountain-climbing solos and frenetic drums that somehow work in opposite of yet in conjunction with plodding doom-like basslines that easily click into hyperdrive when the time hits. Weird. Epic. On the always-interesting Grimoire label.
JUTE GYTE – The Sparrow
Seeing Jute Gyte appear on a couple Gimme shows this week (including the fantastic guest DJ stint from Horrendous), brings me back to this, a 2017 release on etched vinyl via X-Ray that not only defies metal but musical convention. This interview sums up mainman Adam Kalmbach’s aesthetic well. No preset conventions of presentation, taking layers of sounds as construction tools and assembling like collage. Black metal without the formula, composition decisions left to the roll of the dice (literally, as Alex from Horrendous pointed out, guitar notes were decided by rolling 22-sided die).
KRYPTS – Sinking Transient Waters
Blasted Finnish death/doom rife with weird, angular chords, cavernous delay and reverb and a smothering stench put to real music in real time. Big tour ahead, anxious to see what else these heavies get up to.
GODFLESH – Pulp
Back to 1989 for this one, from the classic Streetcleaner (which will be dissected on Jon Wiederhorn’s Metallography show this upcoming Wednesday 6/12 at 4pm PT on Gimme). A place where industrial 80s, Swans pummel, metallic sheens, kraut loops and hypnotic domination of the senses converged and ruled. Machinelike yet humanistic, exhilarating, frightening, powerful sounds.
